Locals share mixed emotions over PAX-1 data center's exemption from Gov. Shapiro's GRID standards
The PAX-1 data center in Middlesex Township, Cumberland County, will be exempt from Governor Shapiro's new GRID standards, which aim to regulate data centers with economic and environmental requirements for faster permits. This decision has caused mixed emotions among locals, with some frustrated by the exemption and others generally supportive of the project. The Middlesex Township Board is scheduled to meet with the developers to discuss a community benefit plan.
The PAX-1 data center project in Middlesex Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, which involves a $15 billion development on a 700-acre tract, will not be required to meet Governor Shapiro's new GRID standards. These guidelines were designed to make data center developers meet economic and environmental criteria to qualify for the state's Fast Track permit program.
State officials from the Shapiro administration confirmed the exemption, stating that the PAX-1 project was already on the fast-track program prior to the GRID proposal. This has elicited mixed reactions from local residents. Eugene Albert, who lives near the site, expressed frustration, arguing that the project should adhere to the same standards as others, particularly concerning on-site power systems and water consumption to protect his neighbors. Conversely, Randy Kirkpatrick, while supportive of the data center, hopes the facility will still strive to meet the GRID initiative's goals.
The Shapiro administration clarified that despite the exemption from the new GRID standards, the PAX-1 project is still subject to other environmental and permitting requirements, with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) continuing thorough reviews. Neighbors have urged municipal and state leaders to address their concerns regarding data center development.
Looking ahead, the Middlesex Township Board is scheduled to hold a meeting to discuss a community benefit plan with the developers of the PAX-1 data center. The meeting is set to take place at the township's municipal building.
