KY Power will build new infrastructure to support TeraWulf data center project
Kentucky Power held an open house for proposed transmission lines and a substation that would supply TeraWulf's Muskie Data Campus in the Boyd and Greenup county area. TeraWulf would fund the infrastructure and a new power plant, but the projects still require approval from the Kentucky Public Service Commission.
Kentucky Power presented plans for two transmission lines and a substation intended to supply electricity to TeraWulf's proposed Muskie Data Campus near the Boyd-Greenup county line. The data center could require up to 1 gigawatt of power, roughly equivalent to Kentucky Power's current generation for its entire service territory.
TeraWulf has agreed to pay for the transmission infrastructure and a separate power plant in Lawrence County, while also pledging $25 monthly credits toward residential customers' winter heating bills for three months a year over a decade. Kentucky Power spokeswoman Sarah Lynch said the large customer could help ease pressure on utility rates, but all related projects must receive approval from the Kentucky Public Service Commission.
