Massive Data Center Proposed for Brookwood, Alabama
Applied Digital, a Texas-based company, is considering a 2 million sq ft data center in Brookwood, Alabama, after receiving a permit from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. The project, which is on the Brookwood Planning and Zoning agenda, faces local environmental concerns and accusations of secrecy, despite the mayor stating no contracts have been signed.
A proposed 2 million square foot data center by Texas-based company Applied Digital is under consideration for Brookwood, Alabama, following a permit approval from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) on July 20th. The facility would be built on over 130 acres across from Brookwood Middle School, part of 1,300 acres owned by Applied Digital in the area.
Environmental advocate John Wathen, representing Hurricane Creek keeper, voiced strong concerns about the project's potential impact on Hurricane Creek and accused the city of negotiating the deal in secret, calling the lack of transparency "dishonest" and "disingenuous."
Brookwood Mayor Joe Barger stated at a recent City Hall meeting that no contracts have been signed, though he did discuss the short-term economic benefits, including jobs and revenue, that such a project could bring. The mayor has not yet responded to inquiries about whether he signed a non-disclosure agreement. Further progress is indicated as 'Project Brookwood' is listed on the upcoming Brookwood Planning and Zoning agenda.
