Oracle and BorderPlex Digital Assets have announced a significant update to Project Jupiter, their AI data center campus in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. The facility will now be fully powered by Bloom Energy fuel cells, leveraging up to 2.45 GW of installed capacity, a move that replaces the previously planned gas turbines and diesel generators. This updated design consolidates the power system into a single microgrid, aiming for a dramatically lower environmental footprint. The adoption of Bloom's fuel cell technology is projected to reduce NOₓ emissions by approximately 92% and utilize a negligible amount of water compared to the original plan. Mahesh Thiagarajan, executive vice president, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, highlighted the commitment to innovation and community priorities, emphasizing the reliable, on-site power with reduced environmental impact. Lanham Napier, chairman, BorderPlex Digital Assets, underscored the project's vision to transform southern New Mexico into a hub for advanced computing, clean energy, and economic growth, citing the creation of better jobs and stronger infrastructure. Aman Joshi, chief commercial officer, Bloom Energy, noted the fuel cell technology's benefits, including cleaner operation, reduced noise, and protection of local electricity rates, positioning it as a model for future data center power solutions. Beyond environmental benefits, Project Jupiter has committed substantial community investments: $50 million for local water system repairs, $360 million for schools, infrastructure, and local services, and $6.9 million for workforce development, the Boys and Girls Club of Las Cruces, clean drinking water initiatives, a community college, and habitat restoration. The project is expected to create 4,000 construction jobs and 1,500 ongoing positions, prioritizing local hiring and New Mexico's skilled workforce.
