Portland City Council considers putting new limits, regulations on data centers
Portland officials are considering new restrictions on data centers because existing ordinances may not adequately address infrastructure, environmental and neighborhood impacts. The city is also considering a temporary moratorium, but no final decision has been made.
Portland City Council leaders are reviewing potential new data center regulations after the city’s Housing and Economic Development Committee identified gaps in existing ordinances. The committee cited infrastructure demands, land and water use, noise pollution, neighborhood impacts and the possibility of higher electricity costs.
Portland residents expressed opposition to data centers, including one resident who called for the facilities to be excluded from the city. Several other Maine communities have adopted temporary moratoriums while they revise local zoning rules, and Portland is considering a similar pause, though no action has been finalized.
