Gradiant to provide water for West Texas data center
Gradiant has signed a contract to provide turnkey water and wastewater infrastructure for a hyperscale AI data center campus in West Texas. The system is designed to maximize water recycling and reuse, minimize freshwater withdrawals, and discharge no wastewater to surface waters amid a pause in data center permitting and heightened scrutiny of water use.
Gradiant has agreed to provide potable water, wastewater treatment and recycling infrastructure for a hyperscale AI data center campus being developed in West Texas. CEO Prakash Govindan said the company’s HyperSolved system is designed for zero discharge to surface water and will use alternative sources, recovery and reuse to reduce reliance on freshwater in the water-constrained region.
The project comes as Texas pauses data center permits while studying power requirements and requires developers to report water use to the Texas Water Development Board. Govindan said Gradiant is discussing similar work with other developers and that water availability is increasingly influencing where new data center capacity is built. He also cautioned that lower on-site water use through closed-loop cooling can shift demand to electricity generation.
