The Leon County Commission unanimously approved an 18-month moratorium on new large-scale data center development. The decision extends beyond an initially proposed one-year pause.

The Leon County Commission has unanimously voted to implement an 18-month moratorium on new large-scale data center development, effective Tuesday. This decision provides county staff with crucial time to research and understand the potential impacts of the rapidly expanding data center industry before evaluating any future projects.

Initially, Commission Chair Christian Caban had proposed a one-year pause last month, but commissioners opted for an extended 18-month period. This temporary halt will stop the processing of all development applications for qualifying large-scale data centers. The additional time is intended to allow for a thorough examination of critical issues, including electricity and water consumption, land-use compatibility, environmental concerns, and overall infrastructure requirements.

The commission's vote follows their directive in June to draft such an ordinance. This move mirrors actions taken or considered by other communities in Florida, as local governments grapple with balancing the economic advantages of data centers against their significant demands on utilities and infrastructure, driven by the growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
