Mayor Wamp proposes one-year moratorium on data centers in unincorporated Hamilton County
Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp has proposed a one-year moratorium on new data centers in unincorporated areas to gather community input and study the potential impacts on rural communities. The newly established Hamilton County Planning Department will spearhead this effort, consulting with utility providers and residents. The Hamilton County Commission is scheduled to vote on the proposed resolution in July.
Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp has announced a proposal for a one-year moratorium on new data center developments within unincorporated areas of the county. The proposed pause is designed to allow for extensive community input and a thorough study of the potential impacts of data centers on rural communities and local infrastructure. This initiative is the first major undertaking for the new Hamilton County Planning Department, which officially commences operations on July 1.
Mayor Wamp stated that the establishment of the county planning department was precisely for addressing developments like data centers that could negatively affect unincorporated areas. During the one-year period, Planning Department staff will research best practices from other communities, consult with utility providers such as TVA, EPB, and local water providers to assess the demands data centers might place on services, and engage with residents and community leaders for their perspectives. The Hamilton County Commission is scheduled to review the proposed resolution during its July 1 agenda session, with an anticipated final vote set for its July 15 meeting.
