Rockford leaders to push ‘moratorium’ on future data centers
Rockford city leaders are proposing a temporary moratorium on future data center developments to allow for a comprehensive review of best practices and potential regulations. This move follows weeks of community backlash over a proposed Monarch Energy data center, with residents expressing concerns about environmental, electrical, health, and noise impacts.
City leaders in Rockford, Illinois, are set to propose a temporary moratorium on new data center developments. The resolution, introduced by council member Jonathan Logemann (D-Ward 2), aims to direct city staff to conduct a comprehensive review of best practices and evaluate potential regulations for data center development, expansion, and operation.
Mayor Tom McNamara stated the proactive step is a response to input from aldermen and concerns raised by residents, ensuring a thoughtful review process for future developments. He emphasized that existing annexation agreements, including those with "no data center provisions" for specific industrial and development areas, must be honored.
The proposal comes amidst significant community backlash regarding the proposed Monarch Energy data center, which has generated concerns over potential environmental, electrical, health, and noise impacts within the South Rockford tax increment financing (TIF) district. City officials clarified that Monarch Energy has no concrete deal and will not receive TIF incentives or financial assistance.
The proposed moratorium is expected to be referred on July 20 and will proceed to the Code and Regulation Committee agenda on July 27 for further discussion, with details regarding its duration yet to be determined.
