Hochul convenes statewide roundtable after moratorium on large-scale data centers
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has issued an executive order declaring a moratorium on large-scale data centers, citing concerns about the state's electric grid capacity and potential cost increases. She subsequently convened a statewide roundtable to discuss the impacts of these facilities. The administration aims to develop a framework for communities to guide future data center development after the moratorium concludes.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has enacted a moratorium on large-scale data centers across the state, asserting that the current electric grid cannot sustain hyperscale facilities without risking energy shortages or increased customer costs. Following the executive order, Governor Hochul hosted a statewide roundtable to address the issue.
State Assemblymember Didi Barrett highlighted residents' desire for clarity on the local impacts of large data centers, particularly concerning natural resources, communities, and energy expenses. During the discussion, Rob Simpson, CEO of CenterState, suggested that major tech companies should contribute to infrastructure upgrades given the necessity of grid modernization. Justin Wilcox, executive director of Upstate United, attributed some of the state's energy challenges to past policy decisions.
Governor Hochul expressed her commitment to establishing a comprehensive plan in the coming months. The goal is to provide a template and framework for communities across New York to make informed decisions about embracing data center development once the moratorium is lifted.
