Local labor unions in Chattanooga, organizing as Jobs with Justice East Tennessee, are voicing strong opposition to tax incentives for AI data centers, particularly an Oracle data center within Jailhouse Studios. They argue that over $300 million in state tax incentives will not create widespread jobs, citing recent Oracle layoffs. Residents are also concerned about the impact on local jobs, water resources from the Tennessee River, and electricity.

Local labor unions in Chattanooga, operating under the banner of Jobs with Justice East Tennessee, have expressed significant concerns regarding recent investments in AI data centers within the city. The unions specifically oppose tax incentives provided to large technology companies, highlighting Oracle as a particular focus.
Their opposition intensified following a Forbes report indicating global layoffs of 30,000 workers at Oracle earlier this month. Jobs with Justice contends that over $300 million in tax incentives from the state of Tennessee will not translate into widespread job creation for the region. They pointed to the recently approved Jailhouse Studios project, which includes an Oracle data center, as a key concern for Chattanooga's future job market. Additionally, the group voiced worries about two other potential data centers planned for downtown Chattanooga.
Katie C., a local entertainer, urged Hamilton County and Chattanooga residents to be aware of these developments, particularly those in downtown areas. She emphasized questions about the impact on local jobs and natural resources like the Tennessee River's water supply and local electricity. Jimmy White, CEO of Urban Story Ventures, had previously stated that the data center within Jailhouse Studios would be small and primarily used to process data for that specific building.
