Mayfield, Syczylo face off for Indiana House District 60
Democratic candidate Carrie Syczylo is campaigning against Google's data center in Monrovia, citing concerns about eminent domain, property values, water use and energy costs. The race also highlights Indiana tax exemptions for data centers and debate over the state's environmental regulatory authority.
Carrie Syczylo, a first-time Democratic candidate for Indiana House District 60, is challenging Republican incumbent Peggy Mayfield in an area that includes parts of Johnson, Morgan and Monroe counties. Syczylo said opposition to Google's data center in Monrovia helped motivate her campaign, arguing that residents could lose property through eminent domain and face impacts from increased water use, energy demand and potential changes in property values.
Syczylo also criticized Indiana's tax incentives for qualified data centers, which can exempt energy and equipment purchases from state sales and use taxes for up to 25 years, or longer for larger investments. She said she would seek greater regulatory authority for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, while also citing concerns about recent changes to Indiana water pollution law. Mayfield did not respond to requests for comment.
