The booming data center industry is creating highly lucrative job opportunities for electricians, particularly in areas like Plano, Texas. However, this growth is met with community opposition due to concerns over rising electricity bills and property values, as tech giants acquire vast tracts of land.

The rapid expansion of data centers across the U.S. is fueling a significant demand for skilled electricians, leading to lucrative, six-figure salaries for young workers. Mike Rowe, host of "Dirty Jobs," highlighted this trend on Fox Business, noting that electricians at a data center in Plano, Texas, were earning $260,000 annually. Plano, located north of Dallas, has become a major hub for data center development, boasting over 200 facilities.
This growth is further evidenced by Dallas-based developer DataBank, which recently secured $2 billion in financing to construct three more data centers in the area. The intense competition for skilled tradespeople is likened to an "electrician arms race" as trillion-dollar tech firms scramble to build out AI infrastructure at an unprecedented pace.
Despite the economic benefits, the data center boom faces considerable public opposition. A recent poll by Blue Rose Research indicated that 52% of Americans oppose data centers in their communities, citing concerns over rising electricity bills and potential decreases in property values. Tech giants' aggressive land acquisition, such as Amazon's $700 million purchase of a Virginia parcel that had been slated for housing, exacerbates these community concerns.
Rowe also framed this trend as a broader societal shift, challenging the traditional emphasis on four-year degrees and advocating for a renewed appreciation of vocational trades, which he testified about to Congress years prior. While not all data center electricians earn the highest reported sums, typical salaries are around $150,000, significantly higher than the national median for electricians.
