The Greenville village board in Wisconsin has unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data center construction. The measure, passed 5-0 on Monday, is intended to give village staff sufficient time to study the potential effects of data centers on the health, safety, and general welfare of residents, businesses, and visitors within the community.

The resolution states that the moratorium is necessary to assess the impacts and secondary effects of data centers, facilitating the development and implementation of relevant Greenville General Ordinances. Village President Jack Anderson emphasized that the moratorium prevents developers from surprising the village with new projects, ensuring community input and protection.

The ban specifically prohibits new data centers of 10,000 square feet or more. Existing telecommunications centers larger than 10,000 square feet are permitted to remain, but structural repairs and alterations are capped at 50% of the building's total assessed value. The village's Planning Commission had recommended the moratorium ordinance in May.
