Amazon has applied to install 280 natural gas and three diesel-fired generators at its data center in Falls Township, Pennsylvania, significantly increasing its backup power capacity. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is reviewing the air quality permit application and has initiated a 30-day public comment period. If approved, the facility's emissions would be capped, classifying it as a "minor source" of pollutants.

Amazon Data Services has applied to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for authorization to install an additional 280 natural gas-fired and three diesel-fired generators at its data center under construction in Falls Township, Pennsylvania. This new application triples Amazon's previous request, which had authorized 76 diesel-fired generators. The generators are intended to ensure 24/7 uptime for the data center, operating only during main power supply interruptions and for brief annual maintenance tests.

Jillian Gallagher, a state DEP air quality environmental program manager, stated that the projected annual emissions from the expanded generator capacity would be similar to various hospitals, universities, and snack food manufacturing facilities in Pennsylvania. If approved, the data center would be required to limit its annual emissions of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides to less than 25 tons, classifying it as a "minor source" of these pollutants.

A 30-day public comment period on the air quality permit application was scheduled to begin on July 18, during which interested residents can request application copies and submit comments to the DEP. Following the comment period, the DEP will issue a final decision, considering only comments related to air quality. Questions regarding noise, aesthetics, traffic, light, or location are to be directed to Falls Township officials.
