Fauquier County data center application withdrawn, residential plan pursued
Convergent VA, LLC has withdrawn its application for a data center near Remington, Virginia, in Fauquier County. The company will instead pursue a by-right residential development on the nearly 140-acre site. This withdrawal follows the company's realization that the data center plan had no chance of approval from county officials.
Convergent VA, LLC has withdrawn its application to rezone a 140-acre property south of Remington, Virginia, in Fauquier County, for the proposed Convergent Technology Park data center. Jeffrey Price, manager for Convergent VA, informed the Fauquier County assistant director of community development, Adam Shellenberger, of the decision in late August, stating the company would instead pursue residential development under the property's existing zoning.
Fauquier County Supervisor Ike Broaddus commented that the withdrawal was "no surprise," as the company had been aware for over a year that the data center plan lacked approval prospects. The property, currently undeveloped, was previously approved for a 198-home subdivision in 2003 by the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors. Convergent VA's application had sought to rezone 104 acres for 1.584 million square feet of data center space, with the remaining 35 acres for residential and recreational uses.
This move by Convergent VA follows a similar action by another developer, Gigaland, which recently pulled its own data center application outside Remington for the second time in a year. Convergent VA's application was slated for review by the Fauquier County Planning Commission on September 17.
