The Chesapeake Alliance, a non-partisan organization of Chesapeake business leaders, recently held an educational forum titled "Understanding Data Centers" to inform community stakeholders and promote fact-based discussions on data center development in the city. David Ropp, chairman of the alliance, emphasized that data centers are a critical economic development and land-use issue, raising questions about infrastructure, power, water, environmental impact, and tax revenue.
The forum highlighted how responsible land-use policies and high development standards, as demonstrated by Mecklenburg County, Virginia, can attract significant private investment, funding public services and maintaining low tax rates. The alliance supports responsible data center development, noting that well-planned facilities can operate efficiently, use resources responsibly, generate substantial tax revenue, and place limited demands on city services.
Key discussions at the forum addressed legitimate environmental concerns regarding water, power, and natural resources. Industry experts presented solutions, such as modern closed-loop or air-cooled cooling systems to reduce water consumption.
