Whitehurst broaches AI ‘hypocrisy’ as St. Johns passes data center moratorium
The St. Johns County Commission voted 5–0 to pause applications for medium and large data centers for one year, beginning Nov. 15. Commissioner Christian Whitehurst supported the pause while criticizing opponents who use AI-generated content, and county staff will study siting and infrastructure impacts.
The St. Johns County Commission voted unanimously to suspend applications for medium and large data centers for one year starting Nov. 15. The pause will allow county staff to study suitable locations, compatibility with surrounding development and whether local infrastructure can support the facilities.
Commissioner Christian Whitehurst backed the moratorium but called AI-generated memes opposing data centers hypocritical because they contribute to data demand. Deputy County Attorney Kealey West said staff would consult utility providers, the St. Johns River Water Management District and other stakeholders, and consider a state study expected in July 2027.
