US Largest Grid Updates Emergency Plan as AI Stretches Capacity
PJM Interconnection, the operator of the largest US power grid, is implementing a new "capacity advisory" to warn customers about potential electricity shortages. This measure is a direct response to surging data center demand, which is straining power supplies even without extreme weather conditions. The advisory aims to communicate when electricity supplies could become tight across the 13 states served by PJM.
PJM Interconnection LLC, the operator of the largest U.S. power grid, announced on Wednesday a new "capacity advisory" system designed to warn customers of impending electricity supply shortages. This proactive measure, which serves 67 million people across 13 states, addresses the significant strain on the grid caused by the surging demand from data centers. Historically, power shortages were primarily driven by extreme weather conditions, but the new advisory acknowledges that data center growth is now a major factor in pushing electricity supplies toward critical levels even in normal circumstances. The system will alert customers when electricity supplies are projected to become tight, reflecting a fundamental shift in grid management in response to the rapid expansion of the data center industry.
