Nye County Commissioners Approve Data Center Ban in Pahrump
The Nye County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a ban on data centers in Pahrump Valley's Basin 162 after a nine-hour meeting. This decision, following months of public opposition and protests, effectively halts the proposed Manse Technology Center project.
On Tuesday, August 18th, the Nye County Board of County Commissioners convened for an extended meeting in Pahrump to address the contentious issue of data center development in the Pahrump Valley. The proposed Manse Technology Center had sparked significant community debate and organized protests since early July, with numerous residents voicing strong opposition.
After hours of public comment where concerns over water supply, power demands, and the tranquility of the predominantly senior community were raised, Commissioners proceeded with their discussion. Commissioner Ian Bayne requested an amendment to the proposed ban, specifying that the prohibition would apply exclusively to Basin 162, the groundwater basin underlying the Pahrump Valley, rather than the entire county.
The Commissioners then voted unanimously, five to zero, to enact the ban on data centers within Basin 162. This decision effectively blocks the Manse Technology Center project from advancing at its planned location near Highway 160 and the Mountain Falls area, while also prohibiting any new data center developments in the designated basin under the county's new ordinance.
