Copper wire stolen from construction site of Loudoun County data center; 3 arrested

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office has arrested three men in connection with the theft of copper wire from a data center construction site in Sterling, Virginia. The suspects, identified as 21-year-old Jamal Muscali, 23-year-old Demetrius Charlton, and 18-year-old Cordell Carter, are facing grand larceny charges.
Deputies were initially called to Maurice Drive in Sterling following reports of a burglary in progress. They subsequently located the suspects driving a U-Haul, inside which they discovered the stolen copper wire.
A data security expert commented on the incident, highlighting that security at data centers must be a paramount concern. He explained that this is not only due to the high value of the equipment but also because of the sensitive information processed and stored within these facilities. The expert warned that compromised data could be used for ransomware attacks, fraud, or identity theft. He stressed that multiple layers of security, including physical measures, alarms, and data encryption, are crucial. If data is encrypted during storage or processing, even if physical theft occurs, attackers without encryption/decryption keys would be unable to access the sensitive information, thereby securing it against physical breaches.
