Estherville's Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved an ordinance establishing zoning rules for data centers in the city. The measure will be reviewed by the Estherville City Council, with a public forum planned for Nov. 16 after a council review on Nov. 2.
PathOne Data Centers has approached city leaders about developing a 25-megawatt, 100,000-square-foot facility on 12 acres in Estherville's industrial park. The project is expected to employ 15 to 25 people. Commission Chair Dorothy Christensen said officials and residents are still learning about data centers and their potential benefits and impacts. Separately, the Emmet County Board of Supervisors approved a 12-month moratorium on data centers in the county's unincorporated areas, which does not apply within Estherville city limits.
