The Wausau Plan Commission has approved new zoning codes specifically for data centers, aiming to proactively regulate potential future projects in the city. The new plans will now proceed to the Common Council for final approval.
The Wausau Plan Commission in Wisconsin has approved new zoning regulations specifically for data centers, a proactive measure as the city anticipates potential future development in the growing sector. Mayor Doug Diny emphasized the importance of getting ahead of the trend to ensure the city has regulatory authority, noting a lack of specific ordinances since 2020. The new codes define data centers and introduce requirements for zoning districts and facility proposals.
The ordinances will mandate detailed information regarding water and energy demand, as well as sound, allowing the city to evaluate a project's compatibility with existing utilities and city objectives, including economic growth and land use balance. Additionally, applications will require a traffic study and minimum parking requirements. These amendments will integrate data center reviews into the conditional use permit process, ensuring case-by-case evaluation of their impact and utility needs.
While there is currently no proposed data center project in Wausau, the city aims to set a standard for data center regulation in the region. The approved plans will now be forwarded to the Common Council for final approval.
