The Jackson County Legislature in Missouri has advanced an ordinance that would impose a 180-day moratorium on the processing of land-use applications for data center development. This move follows an amendment to an initial 120-day proposal.

Jackson County Legislature Chairman Manny Abarca stated that the extended pause is designed to allow county leaders, planning staff, municipalities, and residents additional time to thoroughly evaluate the long-term impacts of data center projects. He acknowledged that while these projects present significant economic opportunities, they also pose substantial challenges that warrant careful consideration.

Abarca clarified that the moratorium's purpose is to facilitate comprehensive planning and is not intended to permanently prohibit data center development or investment in Jackson County. The goal is to ensure the county is prepared for future growth while safeguarding taxpayers, preserving community character, and promoting responsible development. The ordinance is scheduled for a final vote at the next legislative session.
