Missoula County draft study echoes concerns about data centers
Missoula County released a draft study warning that data center developments could pose risks to public health, safety and the natural environment. The study was required after the county enacted an emergency moratorium on data center permits in response to concerns about a proposed seven-megawatt AI data center in Bonner.
Missoula County released a draft study examining the potential effects of data centers on local communities. County planner Patrick Swart said the study identified possible threats to public health and safety, as well as risks to the natural environment.
The study followed the county's passage of an emergency moratorium on data center permits in July. The moratorium was prompted by public concern over a proposed seven-megawatt artificial intelligence data center in Bonner. Nathan Stephens of the Montanans Against Data Centers Action Team said the study's conclusions were encouraging.
