Gov Beshear says specifics of data center exec. order still being worked out

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is overseeing the implementation of an executive order concerning data center development within the state. The order, issued on August 6th, aims to prevent data center projects that would negatively affect air or water quality, considering both on-site and off-site impacts, including those from power plants supplying electricity.

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet is currently in the process of establishing specific rules, procedures, and regulations for the mandatory energy plans required from developers and for the overall permitting process of data centers. Governor Beshear emphasized that the state intends to proactively prevent negative environmental effects on residents rather than leaving communities to negotiate these impacts individually.

The Governor mentioned that the first initial energy plan from a data center developer is expected to be submitted soon, with other companies also signaling their intent to comply. He clarified that details regarding the differentiation of air quality impacts from power plants versus on-site generators will be covered in the forthcoming policies from the Energy and Environment Cabinet.
