A downtown Oakland office building, formerly a supercomputer operation for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is under consideration for conversion into a data center and artificial intelligence complex. The proposal is part of a larger innovation hub envisioned by Oakland City Councilmember Carroll Fife and developer Colin Behring for the building at 415 20th St. The site is notable for its existing 20-megawatt power connection, which a computer science professor from Cal State East Bay noted could simplify power grid issues.
The proposed data center would occupy 20,700 square feet, approximately 1.5% of the multi-building complex which includes 1.4 million square feet of offices, retail, and commercial space. Developer Behring emphasized that the project involves repurposing the existing supercomputer space for a similar operation within a broader campus vision.
While the project aims to enhance economic development, some Oakland residents have voiced concerns regarding potential energy consumption, noise, and overall sustainability. One resident, though not outright opposed, expressed a desire for the facility to provide benefits to the local community. Councilmember Fife and Behring have stated that any future occupant and use must align with the campus's comprehensive vision. No final tenant has been identified, and a definitive decision on the building's future use remains pending.
