Clowns Against Humanity: Standing Up to State Terror with Creativity and Whimsy

The Milwaukee-based anti-fascist clown troupe, Clowns Against Humanity, formed last fall, uses humor and social commentary in their performance art to "stand up to state terror." Comprising individuals with varied backgrounds, the troupe meets weekly to devise skits, drawing inspiration from Portland's Clownbloc and the book *Joyful Militancy*. Founders Grace and Isa emphasize the energizing and optimistic impact of their creative process. The troupe's performances often coincide with days of action and protests addressing sociopolitical issues such as "Big Tech," ICE, and authoritarianism. Their inaugural skit in February took place outside Turner Hall during a town hall meeting focused on AI data centers. In this performance, a "snake oil tech salesperson" promoted an AI computer that, when questioned, angrily revealed issues like excessive water usage, rising electricity costs, and increased carbon emissions attributed to data centers. Clowns Against Humanity also participated in the recent No Kings protest at Washington Park, engaging attendees with interactive performances. Their upcoming performance will be at the Comité Sin Fronteras 'Abolish ICE' picket outside the Federal Courthouse, with members underscoring the disruptive and idea-sharing potential of theater and clowning to foster listening and imagine a better future.
