Soulia: How Bernie used an AI to agree with himself

A video featuring Senator Bernie Sanders discussing AI and privacy with the Claude AI assistant, developed by Anthropic, has been revealed to be highly coached. Tests by FYIVT showed that unprimed instances of Claude provided different, often opposing, responses to Sanders' questions, particularly regarding a proposed moratorium on data center construction. The article highlights how the edited video manipulated the AI's response to endorse a policy Sanders advocates.

Gov: Senator Bernie Sanders
A video circulating on social media features Senator Bernie Sanders in conversation with Claude, an AI assistant developed by Anthropic, discussing AI and privacy. In the edited video, Claude appears to endorse a moratorium on new data center construction, a policy publicly advocated by Sanders, after he raises concerns about data collection and AI's threat to democracy.
However, FYIVT conducted tests with fresh, unprimed instances of Claude, feeding the AI the same questions. The results showed significant discrepancies. When asked about a data center moratorium without prior context, the unprimed Claude pushed back on the idea, identified regulatory alternatives, and noted potential shifts of infrastructure to countries with looser regulations, directly contradicting the edited video's response.
An independent review of the video's full transcript by a separate Claude instance concluded that the interaction was "highly coached or staged," describing the AI's behavior as that of a "political prop" rather than an unbiased analytical tool. The independent instance specifically called out the moratorium endorsement as a "genuinely controversial and economically consequential policy position" that should not be endorsed without critical analysis.
The article also points out the irony of Sanders' focus on privacy, as Anthropic updated its consumer terms of service in August 2025 to default to opt-in data collection for model training, a change that could impact the privacy concerns Sanders highlighted. The report concludes that the edited video's portrayal of Claude's response on the data center moratorium represents a "produced political message" rather than an unscripted AI analysis.
