These facilities generate approximately 45% of Loudoun County's total local tax revenue, occupying only about 3% of the county's land.
This economic benefit emerges as a counterpoint to growing national concerns about data centers' impact on electricity costs, water usage, land development, and local infrastructure, which have become issues in the 2026 midterm elections. Jared Walczak, vice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation, noted that Loudoun County, often called "Data Center Alley," has become the data center capital over decades, leading to property taxes that are roughly half of what they would be otherwise.
Addressing worries that high electricity demands from data centers could increase utility bills for residents, Walczak countered that the industry's property tax impact is more direct and measurable. He explained that data centers typically pay for the required additional generation and transmission capacity, which can actually lead to a slight reduction in energy costs for other consumers by spreading fixed grid costs across a larger base. He cited Northern Virginia's lower energy prices as evidence against fears of increased costs for residents.
