Dozens of Effingham County residents attended a forum at the Mars Theatre in Springfield, Georgia, on Monday, seeking information about Project Camellia, a proposed multi-billion-dollar data center campus by OpenAI. The facility is planned for a 1,400-acre site within the Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub.
Organized by One Hundred Miles and the Georgia Conservation Voters Education Fund, the event aimed to educate the community on potential impacts, including concerns over power grid reliability, utility rates, and the strain on local water resources. However, many residents, including Jeanne Seaver, whose property neighbors the proposed site, felt the discussion became overly political, diverting from practical questions about the data center's effects on their community. Seaver clarified her opposition was strictly about zoning and the project's proximity to residential areas and schools, not the technology itself.
Other attendees echoed the sentiment that partisan rhetoric overshadowed critical local issues such as artificial intelligence, heat mitigation, environmental buffers, and property values. The Effingham County Board of Commissioners is set to convene a workshop on Tuesday to discuss potential development guidelines for the project.
