Huntington, Indiana, city officials and residents convened to deliberate future zoning regulations for potential data center developments. This meeting follows a moratorium on data centers enacted by commissioners in February, which was intended to provide time for research, public engagement, and the drafting of local ordinances before any permits are considered.

The Huntington Plan Commission is currently leaning towards an option that would allow data centers in M1 or M2 industrial/manufacturing zoning districts. During the public comment period, numerous residents voiced their outright opposition to data centers.

Officials confirmed there are no immediate plans for a data center project, with the current discussions focused on proactive preparation and the eventual drafting of a comprehensive ordinance. The moratorium will remain active until a definitive zoning framework is established. The commission is scheduled to continue its data center zoning discussions on August 12th, with plans to move the meeting to a larger venue to accommodate more public attendance.
