Dozens of environmental, labor, and community groups in New Jersey are urging Governor Mikie Sherrill to enact an immediate halt on all data center construction. They cite concerns over significant environmental damage and skyrocketing electricity rates caused by data centers' high power consumption. Governor Sherrill has not yet responded to the demands for a temporary pause.

More than 60 environmental, labor, and community groups across New Jersey have formally petitioned Governor Mikie Sherrill to impose an immediate moratorium on all data center projects in the state. The coalition sent a letter to Governor Sherrill, who campaigned on a more affordable energy policy, warning of "irreversible harm" to New Jersey communities.

The groups argue that data centers consume immense amounts of electricity, contributing to rising utility rates and causing significant environmental impact. They are calling for a temporary pause on all approvals and construction to allow for a thorough assessment of potential damages. This request contrasts with the previous administration of Governor Phil Murphy, which actively encouraged data center development in New Jersey. Governor Sherrill has not yet issued a response to the coalition's demands.
