The proposed moratorium would involve a 45-day waiting period, followed by a public hearing where justification for the pause would be presented. If approved, the moratorium would last 120 days, with an option for a 120-day extension. During this period, county leaders aim to revise local regulations regarding data centers, emphasizing concerns over water and neighborhood impacts.
Commissioners expressed a desire to act independently rather than wait for potential state legislature action during the 2027 session. However, the county's director of transportation and development cautioned that prioritizing this work would necessitate pausing other significant county projects, including state-mandated housing initiatives and urban growth boundary expansions. Despite these warnings, the motion passed 4-0.
