Logan officials are developing guidelines for potential data center construction after the Municipal Council enacted a 180-day moratorium on such development. Proposed rules would limit facilities to industrial zones, require a 1,000-foot buffer from residential areas, and cap their size at 8 acres and 100,000 square feet.

Logan Mayor Mark Anderson said the city is preparing formal guidelines for potential data center development following public meetings that drew substantial feedback, including strong concerns from residents opposed to the facilities. Residents cited possible impacts on electricity demand, water use, noise and land use, although no developer has submitted a data center proposal in Logan.

The Logan Municipal Council approved a 180-day moratorium on June 30 to give staff time to study the issue and draft regulations. The proposed standards would restrict data centers to industrial zones, require a 1,000-foot separation from residential areas, and limit facilities to 8 acres and 100,000 square feet. The code amendment is expected to go before the Logan Planning Commission before the end of October, with a possible Municipal Council vote in January.
