A recent report by the nonpartisan energy and climate policy think tank Energy Innovation suggests that renewable energy could power data centers in Texas more cheaply than fossil fuels. Brendan Pierpont, director of electricity for Energy Innovation, stated that a transition to renewables could reduce national electricity costs by about 17%, saving approximately $5 billion compared to a fossil fuel pathway.

This report emerges amid concerns over the state's power grid. Governor Greg Abbott recently ordered that all new proposed data centers in Texas must pass an audit by the Public Utility Commission and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) before proceeding, an initiative designed to protect grid reliability. Texas, home to the second-highest number of data centers in the U.S., currently has 296 operating facilities and plans for 170 more.

ERCOT is reviewing requests to add nearly 500 gigawatts of power to the Texas grid, with data centers accounting for about 90% of these new power requests. Officials have warned that such a load could jeopardize the grid's stability. Pierpont advocates for fast-tracking renewables, including solar, energy storage, and wind, alongside more efficient local siting and permitting processes.
