Journalist Nicholas Kristof argues that while the debate often centers on electricity prices and water supply, it's fundamentally a proxy for distrust of artificial intelligence (AI) and the companies profiting from it.

Kristof points to the working class's suffering during past economic restructurings and their current suspicion that AI will lead to mass job displacement. He draws parallels to the Luddites, acknowledging the social costs of industrialization but stressing the greater cost of failing to modernize. Kristof suggests that communities should negotiate compensation with data center companies rather than imposing restrictions, and advocates for improved oversight and governance over AI.

Reflecting on trips to rural Kentucky, devastated by job losses, and Norway, which manages economic disruption more effectively, Kristof concludes that American workers' distrust of data centers and AI is rational given the lack of social safety nets. He argues that by strengthening social support systems, healthcare, and job retraining, the U.S. could foster greater public trust, allowing for better AI governance and maintaining economic and technological competitiveness.
