‘I regret selling every day’: Couple regrets selling family land for data center project
A Kings Mountain, NC couple, Roxanne and Tony Wright, express regret after selling their family land to Honey Badger Development (operating as HB2K), believing it was for residential use, only to discover it is planned for an AI data center campus. The developer, HB2K, has filed a lawsuit against the City of Kings Mountain over utilities for the project, and the city recently enacted a data center moratorium, the applicability of which to this project is unclear.
Roxanne and Tony Wright of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, are expressing deep regret after selling their decades-old family property to a developer three years ago. The couple states they believed the land was being purchased for residential construction, unaware that Honey Badger Development, operating as HB2K, intended to build an AI data center campus.
HB2K, a developer based out of Reno, Nevada, with a North Carolina LLC and a Miami, Florida mailing address, is currently engaged in a lawsuit against the City of Kings Mountain concerning utilities for the project. Court documents indicate the property is "fully entitled as an AI data center campus with approved zoning and 150MW-300MW power pathway." Despite the approved zoning, Kings Mountain leaders recently enacted a data center moratorium, though it is currently unknown whether this moratorium affects HB2K's project. The Wrights maintain they would not have sold their land if they had known the true nature of the development.
