The Joliet City Council recently voted to approve plans for a massive 795-acre data center campus, set to become the largest such facility in Illinois. The decision came after a lengthy and at times heated public meeting on Thursday night, which was a continuation of a Monday night session where public comments ran so long the final vote had to be delayed.
The vote to annex farmland for the data center was met with applause by supporters and deep disappointment from opponents. Many residents expressed concerns about the impact on their community and quality of life, with some becoming emotional during their testimony. Police officers were even required to remove individuals who were speaking out of turn. On the other hand, proponents welcomed the development, citing potential job creation in the construction business and an estimated $2 billion in tax revenue for Joliet.
ComEd addressed energy concerns at Monday's meeting, stating that the power needed for the center would not result in increased electric bills for local businesses or residents. Despite these assurances, long-time Joliet resident Kathleen Garces voiced devastation, relating the development to a previous situation where development led to her homelessness and expressing concerns about lost peace, quietness, and health. Developers anticipate the data center could soon be operational following this crucial vote.
