The Independence City Council postponed a vote on approving the transfer of a leasehold interest that would allow Patmos to build a second data center in the Little Blue Valley. The proposed facility would initially have 17.5 megawatts of capacity, while residents continue to oppose nearby data center development and a lawsuit over Nebius's project is pending.

The Independence City Council delayed a vote on a resolution approving NorthPoint Development's transfer of part of its lease at the EastGate Commerce Center to Patmos. The company plans to build a data center at 2500 South Little Blue Parkway, initially totaling 17.5 megawatts, with a potential 100-megawatt, 285,000-square-foot facility described in its building permit application. The matter is scheduled to return to the council on Nov. 2, with the lease transaction expected to close Nov. 12 if approved.

Patmos's project is grandfathered under Independence's newly adopted data center zoning rules because its application preceded the city's moratorium and subsequent zoning review. The project is expected to use fewer than 10,000 gallons of city water per day and include six muffled backup generators. Residents previously opposed Nebius's larger project, which the council approved, and a group of residents has sued Nebius, the city and a company involved in planned power generation; a hearing is scheduled for Oct. 22.
