Lawmakers promote data center rate bill
A bipartisan bill, the Ratepayer Protection Act, has passed the U.S. House and is now in the Senate. This legislation aims to require data centers and other large energy consumers to cover the costs of their increased power demand and necessary grid upgrades, preventing these expenses from being passed to residential ratepayers.
U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and U.S. Rep. Julie Fedorchak, R-N.D., held a press conference in Fargo, North Dakota, to promote the Ratepayer Protection Act. The bipartisan bill, which recently passed the House with a 417-3 vote, is now advancing through the Senate.
This proposed legislation mandates that data centers and other substantial energy users bear the full cost of their additional power consumption and any necessary grid infrastructure enhancements. Supporters of the bill argue it will safeguard regular customers from incurring increased electricity rates due to the significant energy demands of large industrial facilities, including data centers.
