Hosted at the historic Polk Stables, the festival emphasized community connection and the preservation of the historically Black neighborhood. Kenedy Manuel, an organizer at the Harrison Center, highlighted the festival's role in fostering neighborly ties and resource leverage.
A significant part of the celebration focused on a $5.5 million investment from KIPP Indy Public Schools, funded by a Lilly Endowment grant. This initiative will be distributed over four years among six community-based organizations, including the Harrison Center, to expand opportunities for local students and families. The event also featured a tribute to community leader Gina Fears and recognized "greatriach" elders for their long-term residency.
While residents like 86-year-old Mattie Kates reflected on the neighborhood's evolution and changes in community interaction, the festival also addressed future developments. Community leaders present at the event expressed a clear opposition to a planned data center slated for construction in the coming years. Eunice Trotter, director of the Black Heritage Preservation Program, advocated for securing the neighborhood's status as a historical landmark, seeing it as crucial for its ongoing "renaissance." The collective sentiment among residents was a commitment to preserving Martindale-Brightwood's unique history and culture amidst ongoing changes.
