Texas data center fight heats up as Democrats demand special session

Governor Greg Abbott has temporarily paused new data center construction and plans across Texas, initiating an audit by state regulators to assess their impacts on the state's power grid. This review process is anticipated to span several months. In response, Abbott has also introduced "guardrails and guidelines" for data center operations, which include a requirement for them to provide their own power.

This executive action has ignited a significant political dispute, with Texas Democrats demanding that Governor Abbott call a special legislative session to address data center concerns more thoroughly through state legislation. Gina Hinojosa, who is challenging Abbott for the governorship, has publicly called for a special session, stating she would convene one if elected. Critics argue that data centers have failed to secure adequate local community support and collaborate effectively with local governments, leading to public backlash.

The next regular legislative session is not scheduled until January. Without a special session, any new legislation regarding data centers would not be passed until early 2027. The issue is gaining prominence as the midterm elections draw closer.
