Fort Wayne City Council debates task force, transparency for Google data center
Fort Wayne City Council is debating three bills aimed at increasing transparency and potentially forming a task force concerning Google's data center project. Councilman Russ Jehl is pushing for more public information and discussion, facing pushback from Community Development Director Jonathan Leist who claims information has already been provided. Both sides express openness to a task force but disagree on details and the need for new bills.
Fort Wayne City Council is considering three bills related to Google's data center project, focusing on public disclosure of information, a report on the project, and the formation of a task force. The initiative is spearheaded by 2nd District Councilman Russ Jehl, who believes the public and council lack sufficient information about the data center and the financial deal with Google.
Jonathan Leist, Fort Wayne's Community Development Director, responded to these bills with an email that Councilman Jehl described as a "preemptive rebuke." Leist insists that the city has already provided all necessary information in monthly reports and that Jehl's bills misrepresent the deal's circumstances. Despite the disagreement over past communications, both Jehl and Leist expressed openness to the idea of a task force, with Leist wanting more city input on its composition and Jehl seeing it as an opportunity for public questions to be answered and input to be gathered as the data center issue evolves.
Councilman Jehl highlighted national skepticism surrounding data center developments, advocating for the city to address public concerns rather than dismiss them. Leist, in turn, emphasized correcting inaccuracies about data centers. The city maintains a list of FAQs on its "Engage Fort Wayne" page. The city council is expected to weigh in on all three of Jehl's bills, which will be made public on WANE.com.
