Data centers could be more difficult to build in this Middle Tennessee city if new zoning rules go through
The city of La Vergne, Tennessee, is considering new zoning rules that would significantly restrict where data centers can be built. An amendment will be recommended to the Board of Mayor and Alderman to remove three of the four currently permitted zoning districts for data centers, limiting them to only Interchange Districts. This change would prevent data centers from bordering single-family residential neighborhoods and introduce new distance requirements.
The city of La Vergne, Tennessee, is poised to consider significant changes to its zoning ordinance concerning data centers. The city's planning commission met on July 14 and will officially recommend to the Board of Mayor and Alderman that the zoning rules be amended to severely limit the permissible locations for such facilities.
Currently, data centers are allowed in four specific zoning districts, including Central Commercial, Civic and Institutional, and Innovation Districts, which often border residential areas. Under the proposed amendment, three of these permitted districts would be removed, leaving only the city's designated Interchange Districts as viable locations. This would drastically reduce the available land for data center development within La Vergne. The new rules would also prohibit data centers from bordering single-family residential neighborhoods and introduce new distance requirements. A planning commission meeting is scheduled for Tuesday to further discuss these changes.
