Data center committee could get $50K for research
Greenwood County Council directed staff to prepare a $50,000 budget line for its newly formed Ad Hoc Committee for Data Centers, although no funding vote was taken. The committee will study whether data centers should be allowed in the county and what regulations may be needed, beginning with water and sewer issues.
Greenwood County Council directed staff to include a proposed $50,000 allocation in the county budget for its seven-member Ad Hoc Committee for Data Centers. The funding would come from the county’s fund balance and could support expert advice, testimony and travel as the committee examines data center development. A formal funding resolution is expected to return at the council’s next meeting.
Deputy County Manager for Finance Steffanie Dorn said the committee’s needs remain uncertain, while Councilman Robbie Templeton and Chairman Theo Lane supported the proposed starting amount. Chaired by Steve Coleman with Dave Schofield as vice chairman, the committee will initially examine water and sewer concerns before studying infrastructure, noise and environmental impacts and recommending possible regulations to Greenwood County Council.
