Tensions are high in Salix, Iowa, as residents voice strong opposition to a potential Google data center project. Mayor Kevin Nelson confirmed that any commercial or industrial development on the 900 acres of newly annexed agricultural land would necessitate a zoning change.
Documents from Salix City Hall show that landowners submitted voluntary annexation paperwork on March 12, which the Salix City Council unanimously approved on April 8. However, residents like Ingrid Brenden, part of an anti-data center group, allege that this constitutes illegal "spot zoning" and contradicts the city's comprehensive plan, which emphasizes transparency and maintaining the town's small-town character. Brenden also accused Mayor Nelson of a lack of transparency in the annexation process.
Ashley Wolfe, another resident living near the proposed site, expressed her unwillingness to live near a data center and plans to attend an upcoming Salix City Council meeting. At this meeting, Google is expected to present its case to the community. While Mayor Nelson did not disclose the exact price for the land, Brenden estimates the sale could be around $50 million.
