
OpenAI’s $20 Billion AI Data Center Puts Georgia in AI Race
OpenAI plans to invest $20 billion to build Project Camellia, one of the nation's largest AI data centers, in Effingham County, Georgia. This massive 1,400-acre project will create thousands of jobs and requires up to 3.2 gigawatts of electricity from Georgia Power, raising concerns from environmental groups about its resource demands and impact.
OpenAI has announced a monumental $20 billion investment to construct one of the United States' largest artificial intelligence data center campuses in Effingham County, Georgia. Dubbed Project Camellia, the ambitious 1,400-acre development is projected to generate thousands of construction jobs and approximately 1,000 permanent positions, positioning coastal Georgia as a significant hub for AI infrastructure.
The multi-phase project is slated for completion by 2032 and includes a long-term agreement with Georgia Power for up to 3.2 gigawatts of electricity. Effingham County Commission Chairman Jeffrey C. Roach hailed the investment as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" that will boost the local economy and expand the tax base. OpenAI's Vice President of Global Affairs, Chris Lehane, emphasized the company's commitment to community partnership, highlighted by an $80 million community investment package that includes workforce development programs and AI credits for Georgia educational institutions.
OpenAI states its campus will feature a closed-loop cooling system to minimize water usage and has pledged to cover all necessary infrastructure improvements, as well as reduce electricity consumption during peak demand to support grid stability. However, environmental organizations, including the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), have voiced concerns, urging closer examination of such hyperscale data center expansions due to their considerable energy demands and potential effects on utility costs and the environment. Energy policy advocates also questioned the impact on power generation needs and long-term consumer costs.
