A proposed data center moratorium in Memphis was delayed until Oct. 20 after an emotional City Council meeting marked by strong community opposition. Residents, including Amber Lowe, said people involved in the development had not adequately communicated with the community and described the situation as a hazard.

The disagreement continued inside the council chamber and hallway, where Councilwoman Yolanda Cooper-Sutton argued with a member of the audience and criticized Councilman JB Smiley Jr. for confusing residents. Protesters chanted after the vote delay, officers cleared portions of the building, and a physical altercation occurred outside the lobby. Smiley later said city leaders should listen more closely to residents while balancing their concerns with the city’s interests.
