Missoula County Considers Pausing New Data Center Development Starting July 9
Missoula County commissioners are considering a temporary moratorium on new data center developments and expansions, with a public hearing scheduled for July 9. This move is intended to allow time for new zoning regulations to address environmental impacts and is currently affecting a proposal by Krambu for a data center at the former Stimson Mill site in Bonner, which has already faced community opposition.
Missoula County commissioners are moving to enact interim zoning regulations that would place a temporary pause on new data center development and expansion in the area. A public hearing is scheduled for July 9 to consider this measure, which county officials state is necessary to develop updated zoning rules addressing potential impacts on natural resources, including high energy and water consumption, noise, and heat.
The proposed moratorium directly impacts Krambu's plan to open a data center at the former Stimson Mill site in Bonner. This site previously housed a crypto mining operation that drew community opposition. Hundreds of residents have signed a petition expressing concerns about the power and water demands of data centers, as well as their compatibility with Bonner's residential and recreational development. The meeting will take place at 2 p.m. at the Missoula County Courthouse, with virtual participation options.
